UK: Now also British cucumbers at Asda and Sainsbury

In a new report from ProduceView the UK retail prices of cucumber, mixed chillies and cherry tomatoes are recorded. These prices are monitored at nine supermarkets in the UK, namely: Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda, Morrisons, M&S, Waitrose, Lidl, Aldi, and Co-op. The prices have been monitored over the last 15 weeks.

Cucumber

This week, the cucumber retail prices are between £0.44 (Aldi and Lidl) and £0.80 (Co-op) and the average price is £0.52. In general, the prices remained quite stable over the past 15 weeks. During the measurement period, the cucumber was only on promotion twice (Lidl). In general, the cucumbers are supplied from Spain. However, We can see that the retailers are increasingly starting to supply British cucumbers. This week, for example, the British cucumber is available at Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's, and Waitrose.

Mixed Chillies

Over the last 15 weeks, the average retail prices of mixed chillies remained stable. However, large price differences between the retailers can be noticed. This week, the retail price of mixed chillies was between £6.00 (Aldi) and £20.00 (Waitrose) per kilo. The average price is £10.67 per kilo. Over the entire measurement period, and also this week, the mixed chillies were included in the promotion at Sainsbury's. Over the entire measurement period, the mixed chillies came from many different countries; Mozambique, Kenya, UK, Egypt, Jersey, Senegal, Morocco, India, Spain, Portugal, France and Zambia. This week, the retailers supplied mixed chillies from Kenya, Senegal, Egypt, and Spain. The majority of retailers interchange from the countries of origin for the mixed chillies. The only retailer that did not do that was M&S; they only supplied mixed chillies from Kenya.

Cherry tomatoes

The cherry tomatoes are measured per kilo. The retail price of cherry tomatoes is between £2.10 (Aldi) and £9.00 (M&S). The average price is £3.26 per kilo which is forced up by the £9.00 retail price of M&S. This week, and in general, the cherry tomatoes are supplied from Morocco and Spain. Week 49 was the last week that the retailers supplied peppers from the UK.
