Lettuce winter varieties - Favourable prices provide an early harvest

The favourable prices for lettuce caused the variety trial to be harvested at a fairly early stage (average 370 grams). Under these circumstances, Brighton and Pazmanea emerged as the best choice for the winter. Gardia and Presteria by contrast, were disappointing and Coby showed a poor crop filling.

During the trial visit the opportunity was offered to see the varieties up close. After consultation with the grower, it was decided to let the lettuce grow a little longer, so that an assessment of the varieties could be made at a later stage. The results will later be communicated.

Discussion
In crop weight, there were no statistically significant differences between the varieties. Brighton did show the slightest difference in weight. Presteria however, showed more variation. The varieties all had a high uniformity. Especially Pazmanea and Brighton were better than the others. Brighton recorded the best field filling. In these trials, Gardia and Presteria had a lesser field filling. This is especially notable for Presteria: last year it displayed a similar result to Brighton.

The very open crops of Gardia and Presteria were particularly noticeable (see Figure 1). Last year, both were still among the best varieties for this property. Like last year, Coby showed poorer crop filling. The colour differences between the varieties were minimal. Again, Coby showed a slightly darker colour.
