US: Microsoft grows vegetables for office canteen

The campus of software giant Microsoft has its own organic vegetable garden. The office canteen is growing lettuce and sprouts for its own use. The restaurant at the Microsoft headquarters in Redmond has enormous vertical towers displaying lettuce and micro vegetables. The cultivation is completely organic. For the remaining supply of food, the restaurant buys from local organic growers.

According to manager Mark Freeman of Microsoft's Dining and Beverages Services, the staff of the software giant has a great interest in sustainable food. "They want to know what is in their food and where the ingredients come from," he states in an interview on the Microsoft Web site.

Contribution
The employees want to contribute themselves, says Freeman. The makers of the Xbox suggested using plasma lamps instead of LED lighting. The light spectrum of plasma is much more complete, resulting in a more natural growth. According to Freeman, the Microsoft campus is somewhat similar to the infrastructure of a city. "It’s interesting to experiment and see where we end up."

The ultimate goal is to grow all the lettuce and micro-vegetables for the canteen within the company itself. That's about 270 trays per week.
