The Sweet Palermo was launched at Fruit Logistica, which took place from 4-6 February in Berlin. Jan Doldersum, Manager Marketing & Business Development at Rijk Zwaan, has high expectations of this newcomer. “The pepper category is on the brink of a similar development that we’ve previously seen in tomatoes: this is an innovative product that will significantly boost the entire market. As consumers will soon discover, the Sweet Palermo is truly dierent from regular peppers.”
Surprisingly sweet, versatile and convenient
The Sweet Palermo’s unique flavour is not just a matter of taste – the numbers prove it too. Whereas most standard sweet, pointed peppers have a maximum brix value of 7, Sweet Palermo achieves a 9. This, combined with its rich bouquet of fruit and fresh herbs, ensures that the Sweet Palermo performs exceptionally well in taste tests, even among children. Furthermore the Sweet Palermo sets itself apart with its so, thin skin and small number of seeds inside, which also makes it easy to work with. Moreover it requires hardly any preparation because the Sweet Palermo is perfect just as it is, whether as an on-the-go snack, to add colour to a sandwich or as a salad ingredient. It is just as versatile in cooking, and can be fried, stir-fried, boiled, steamed, grilled or roasted – either in the oven or on the BBQ. At a time when vegetables are increasingly being presented as the preferred main ingredients or focal points of a meal, the Sweet Palermo is a welcome addition for a wide variety of dishes, hot or cold. Not only rich in flavour
The Sweet Palermo is not only delicious, versatile and convenient in the kitchen, but it also excels in terms of nutritional values. While regular peppers are a valuable source of vitamins, this pointed pepper goes a step further; the Sweet Palermo is rich in vitamin C, A and vitamin E as well as folic acid, magnesium, beta-carotene and potassium.Consistent quality and constant availability thanks to an exclusive growers’groupThe Sweet Palermo is based on the Palermo RZ variety which Rijk Zwaan developed following many years of breeding work. Consistent quality and constant availability are guaranteed thanks to intensive collaboration within the Palermo Originals Group. Rijk Zwaan’s Jan Doldersum: “That’s an exclusive group of specially selected growers and partners who share our ambition to make this unique taste sensation available to consumers worldwide. This group is also committed to continual innovation by producing new varieties which will further boost pepper consumption. In addition to a red Sweet Palermo, a yellow one is already available and an orange version will follow shortly. Hence the future of the pepper category is looking very colourful, in more ways than one!”For more information
