"Brightbox” new name for high tech horticulture center in Venlo"
Brightbox is the new name of the research and educational center in the Atrium of the Venlo Innovatoren in The Netherlands. Both the new name and logo were unveiled this week by its partners (HAS University of Applied Sciences, Botany, Philips Horticulture LED Solutions and the Province of Limburg). The new horticultural facility will be officially opened on 25 February.
Naming contest
Rens Janssen, student of Business and agribusiness at HAS College, won the contest and was awarded with a mini Brightbox. Rens says the word Brightbox perfectly fits the facility: "I associate a box with unexpected content, and 'bright' I think works very well in this case. The word not only means "smart" but also "clear." And the link with Brightlands, the collective noun of the Limburg campuses, is of course easily made."
So what is this Brightbox?
The Province of Limburg, Philips Horticulture LED Solutions, HAS University of Applied Sciences and Botany are working together on the former Floriade site in Venlo to build a research and educational center in the field of high-tech horticulture. In the impressive white 'box', plants are cultivated in climate cells, independent of natural factors. Within the facility, all factors determining the growth of a plant (light, air, temperature, power supply, water and soil / substrate) can be controlled. It is the first European project that does multilayer cultivation research on all these factors at a commercial scale.
The "box" consists of two research zones and a production area, and is but the first step in the transformation of the former Floriade site to the Knowledge Landscape of the Brightlands Campus Greenport Venlo.
