First Dutch cucumbers on the market again

The start of January means that the first Dutch cucumbers will once again appear on the market.

As usual Witkamp is one of the first to have the product. Last year they had them on the 8th of January, two years ago on the 11th and this year Erik van Gentevoort had the Dutch cucumbers by Wednesday, January 7th. As far as prospects for the Dutch cucumber season are concerned, the trader remains reserved. "We were positive last year, but the outcome didn't live up to it. But perhaps the smaller area will improve the season somewhat."

The cucumbers grown under light mainly go to retailers. "The Dutch vegetable sellers appreciate a Dutch cucumber." Quality is also a factor in this. "The Spanish are good, but have a weeks travel. The Dutch are tastier and a week fresher," explains Van Gentevoor. The trader says supplying quality is the way to define yourself in the market, hence he is happy with the Dutch supply.
