Mexican growers apprehend the benefits of automation

As the Mexican growers are increasingly trying to enhance the quality of their crop, automation is becoming important, explains Jose Carretero Perez, Area Manager Export at Flier Systems. However, the labour costs makes automation, financially speaking, less attractive. Consequently the percentages that will be lost due to not optimized processes, is high. When doing grafting manually, for example, plants can be lost easily. Therefore it might be interesting for growers, especially Mexican growers, to use solutions that are completely tailored to their needs and even using lower skilled or not specially trained people, for this activity.

Flier Systems noticed this trend and attended the Expo Agroalimentaria in Mexico for the first time. During this show, they were promoting their products, solutions and services and in particular their grafting machine which can be tailored to the growers needs, but also any other production process is taylor-fitted to customer demands by using Fliers FL'EX Programme.

“Nowadays, automatic grafting is a hot item”, says Jose. Grafting is a specific process that needs to be done very carefully and by high skilled staff. Therefore automation on grafting is becoming increasingly popular. This also counts for the Mexican customers which require it. “By using the ISO Graft 1100 from Flier Systems/ISO Group, with a success rate higher than 99%, costs will be reduced with large numbers. Therefore, it will attract the high quality plant raisers in Mexico, which enables us to enter the Mexican market.”

In order to tailor the machine to the growers needs, Flier Systems developed the FL’EX Programme. This programme creates an appropriate 3D design of a machine or system based on the customers’ requirements and proven technology, explains Jose. The design is made together with the customer; so he can immediately see what the solution would look like. This solution is tailored to match the size of the grower's organization and business operations. The customer only has to invest in what he currently needs without cutting back on quality or sustainability. Moreover, thanks to the modular construction, scaling up is easy whenever the grower needs to expand. “The programme is a tool for local partners to provide the right solution and fit in just a couple of clicks.” says Jose.

According to Jose, Flier Systems went from serving only the top segment to also serving the middle segment with the FL’EX programme. But without doing any concessions to the high quality standards that always characterised the company. Therefore, the programme will be very suitable for Mexican plant raisers or any other customer worldwide. It is well known that the wages are low in Mexico compared with other countries. However, the demand for high quality products is increasing. Therefore the FL’EX range will fit the Mexican preferences perfectly, explains Jose.

With this tool, the entrepreneur can decide which stage in the production process he would like to automate. But also which scaling level is more suited to his needs. In all cases, this will deliver an improvement of efficiency in any activity involved with the plant raising, propagation and even breeding processes. Therefore, the grower can benefit from the reduction on production costs, the higher quality of his production, higher efficiency of the processes and even improving the working environment/conditions, all at once.

The activities of Flier Systems and their interest in the Mexican needs will also be presented at the first seminar of Horticonnect on January 15. This seminar will take place at the Hoogendoon Training Centre at the Agro park, nearby Queretaro in Mexico. "Horticonnect is a initiative which has flown from a Dutch partners cooperation and will increase our activities in Mexico (as group and individuals) to improve our support to Mexican growers needs".
