Nico van Vliet, of De Ruiter, about Morraine

"Green peppers no longer just part of the traffic light"

This year, green peppers are proving once again their value for both growers and supply chain given the constant demand and better prices in comparison with the other colours. "Our Morraine green pepper has proven itself again this year as the most reliable variety for growers and supply chain," says Nico van Vliet, of De Ruiter. "In the past, green peppers were often only seen as a necessary part of the traffic light packaging because of their colour and price. Now it is becoming clearer that green peppers are quite unique in terms of taste, colour and preparation."

Green peppers today meet the following characteristics:
  • Dark green colour
  • Slow colouration to red
  • Ideal sorting
  • Characteristic block shape
  • Exceptional quality after harvest and storage
  • High productivity
  • Characteristic "green" flavour
In 2014, it has been determined from both practice and independent research that the Morraine has the following unique features:

• Outstanding dark green colour; a basic condition for a good green variety.
• Very slow colouring to red; labour-friendly due to less frequent harvest and a reliable green product, although also possible to harvest red (good experience with this in Belgium).
• Characteristic block shape and a good percentage of solid, firm fruits, which result in good quality/price ratio.
• Better performance as a result of the high productivity and low labour costs.

"In short," concludes Van Vliet, "Morraine is the right choice for the 2014-2015 season from the perspective of both growers and the supply chain."
