Syngenta preps for a deal — without Monsanto

According to bizjournals.com, with or without Monsanto — Syngenta AG may be gearing up for a deal. While preliminary merger talks reported between Monsanto and Syngenta earlier this year did not culminate in a transaction, the discussions indicate Syngenta is open to a deal — either as an acquirer or a target, Bloomberg reports.

Possibilities for the $34 billion Syngenta being discussed by analysts and experts include a takeover of Dow Chemical Co.'s agricultural business or a merger with DuPont Co.

"The fact that maybe it didn't happen with Monsanto doesn't mean it couldn't happen with someone else," Bill Selesky of Argus Research Co. told Bloomberg.

After talks fizzled between Monsanto and Syngenta, Monsanto announced a $10 billion stock buyback. Matt Arnold of Edward Jones told Bloomberg that this moves reduces Monsanto's financial flexibility.
