Desch Plantpak invests 5 million Euro in sustainable horticulture

In the years ahead, Desch Plantpak will invest 5 million Euro in efforts to make its machinery sustainable. Jan Willem Wieringa, the Managing Director at Desch Plantpak announces that investments will be made in its production sites in the Netherlands and England. "We have every confidence that a sustainable future lies ahead for the horticulture industry."

Desch Plantpak is one of the world’s biggest producers of pots, containers, trays and packs. Several well-known products supplied by the company are Epla pots and Normpack® trays. Desch Plantpak uses both the thermoform and injection moulding methods and has five production sites: three in the Netherlands and two in England.

A biobased product line

Sustainability is one of the spearheads at Desch Plantpak. For example, it launched D-Grade®, a bio-based product line several years ago. The pots and trays produced are all completely free of oil components and are 100% recyclable. Green energy from GDF Suez is used in the production process. D-Grade® has been certified by a number of international bodies, including Din Certco and AIB Vinçotte (OK Compost and OK Biobased).

However, sustainability goes further than this at Desch Plantpak. For example, the majority of the pots and trays that the company supplies are made from recycled material, Wieringa says. "We are the front runner in the sustainable production of trays and pots. Here at Desch Plantpak, we feel that anything that grows and blooms needs our attention. Fortunately, our clients and the end consumer agree: demand for sustainable products is growing. We believe that this demand will continue to grow in the future."

'Growing together'

Given the above, Desch Plantpak will continue to invest in efforts to achieve further sustainability of its machinery in the years ahead. Investment will include new injection moulding machines, an extruder and a thermoform machine. Wieringa: "All these machines have a higher capacity and use less energy too. They are also more economic with the materials available."

Desch Plantpak believes that these investments show its faith in the future of the horticulture industry. "The industry has had some difficult years, but management and our staff and investors have every confidence in the horticulture industry. This is exactly why our slogan is 'Growing together'. The horticultural industry is a

very strong industry in which innovative entrepreneurs are operating. We feel very at home in the industry and place great value on innovation. This is why we want to unite with horticulturists to grow towards a sustainable future together”, Wieringa says.

Greentech and Flowertrials

Desch Plantpak will be an exhibitor at the first edition of the GreenTech exhibition, which will be held at the Amsterdam Rai Exhibition and Convention Centre from 10 to 12 June inclusive. Desch Plantpak will present a number of products at its stand (no. 10.408), including the new series of Normpack® 300 trays. Epla will be represented at the Flowertrials at Florensis in Hendrik-Ido Ambacht from 10 to 13 June inclusive.
