Remote-controlled cultivation a reality in the future?

To ensure a healthy future for the greenhouse sector with a substantial increase in productivity and quality of produce, breakthrough innovations are needed in various fields. Essential is that the benefits of innovation aren’t limited to a small group of entrepreneurs, but that the entire industry can benefit as well. Innovation and Demonstration Centers, where entrepreneurs work on the application and implementation of knowledge within and outside the sector, are of vital importance.

The IDC Digitaal Telen (Digital Cultivation) is going to help growers to bridge gaps. Scaling and investors from outside the sector make it necessary to properly visualize risks. Risk control is vital in major investments.

The IDC Digital Cultivation is housed in a practical section of the Improvement Centre, which is continuously monitored. In the crop, sensors, cameras and weighing systems are installed, which collect the necessary information. In addition, a control room is equipped, located in the Horti House, where data is collected from the cultivation department. The info collected here is later used as guidance for the implementation of remote-controlled cultivation.

One application of this project is to create a dashboard able to display actual situation at a single glance. This panel should also be able to analyse the data and display bandwidths.

During the project’s run (until end 2015), findings are regularly communicated through press releases, articles and open days (knowledge cafes).
