Russia: Country's largest greenhouse complex to be built in the Kaluga region

According to Regnum.ru, LLC "Agro- Invest" begins the construction of greenhouses with year-round vegetable production in the special economic zone "Lyudinovo" in the Kaluga region. The greenhouse complex will be the first "resident" of the special economic zone which will grow tomatoes, cucumbers and vegetable greens. It will occupy an area of about 238 hectares. Investments in the project will exceed 13 billion rubles (+/- € 276,653,000). The planned annual production volume will be approximately 70 thousand tons and in 2015 the complex is expected to produce more than 10 thousand tons of vegetables. Modern high-tech equipment will make it possible to collect up to four harvests a year. The company will create approximately 1200 jobs.

At the end of this year, the first stage of the construction is expected to be completed: the first 20 hectares of greenhouses, a power supply unit and a sorting & packing line will be put into operation.

According to the Governor of Kaluga region Anatoly Artamonov, the growing demand of country’s population for fresh and high-quality vegetables will ensure sales success for the company. "The abundance of local vegetables will make their import from abroad unnecessary. Our economy should be diversified, so that we are in no way dependent on imports", - said the head of the Kaluga region.

According to the head of the municipal district "City Lyudinovo and Lyudinovskiy district" Lubov Goncharova, the greenhouse complex will be the largest in the CIS. The company expects to recoup investments in the special economic zone "Lyudinovo" within eight years. The main distribution channels of produced vegetables will be retail chains, regional wholesalers and local catering businesses.
