France: Start-up company growing lettuce with vapour

A start-up company, Combagroup, have been growing lettuce and chicory for the last 4 months thanks to a robot. It diffuses a fog of nutrients that the salad needs to grow (nitrogen, calcium, phosphorus…) directly onto the roots in the air.

The company save on 90% of water compared to conventional farming. ''Our aim is to create a technology to produce salad that is pure, local, pesticide, earth and insect free'' explains Marie de Raismes, co-founder with Benoit de Combaud.

Their pilot greenhouse is 500m2. The salads are grown in trolleys that are tightly stored together in rows and moved as they grow. Once harvested the lettuce is sent off to be cut and put in sachets.
