Morocco: McDonald's shows journey of lettuce before it arrives in a burger

McDonald's shows us the journey taken by their lettuce before it arrives in a burger. The lettuce used is called Iceberg lettuce and is not very common in Morocco, so is different to that found in other burgers.

The name originates from when it was transported from the West coast to East coast of America and blocks of ice were used to preserve the leaves.

Iceberg farming in Morocco is rare, Abderrahmane is one of the few suppliers of American fast food chains. He uses a modern treatment system with phytosanitary products. His field in the Gharb region supplies all McDonald's restaurants in Morocco.

Once harvested, the lettuce is sent to Real Food Industries (RFI). RFI prepares vegetables used by the chain - chopping, washing, packaging.

The lettuce and other ingredients are then sent to Foodipex, a logistics platform, where all of the products used are regrouped. This is the last stage before distribution.

Once in the McDonald's kitchen the employees need less than 5 minutes to prepare the sandwiches.
