Germany: Scherzer Gemüse moves to giant, 10mn Euro greenhouse complex

Family business 'Scherzer Gemüse' has invested ten million Euro in a huge greenhouse complex in Waldeck, now officially put in use for the cultivation of tomatoes. The company plans to continue its rapid expansion with three hectares, in addition to the existing seven. "Stagnation means decline," seems to be Senior director Peter Scherzer’s motto, supported by his son Stefan and the other family members involved in the business.

Scherzer Gemüse grows tomatoes and plum tomatoes, mainly for discounters. Produce is cultivated on a substrate made of coconut fibre. Fertilizer and watering is done almost automatically, and bumblebees provide pollination. Against pests such as whitefly, beneficial insects are used. For the heating of the greenhouse use is made of the waste heat from the adjacent heating plant.
