Mexico: Sonora greenhouses equipped with latest technology

Greenhouses in the Mexican State of Sonora are equipped with the latest technology for the production of speciality products, such as tomatoes, bell peppers and cucumbers, which reach a high commercial value and are exclusively shipped to overseas markets.

This was stated by the president of Sistema Producto Tomate, Manuel Antonio Cazares Castro, who said that Sonora has about 480 hectares of greenhouses.

This acreage is devoted to the cultivation of speciality tomatoes, such as globe, globe on the vine, cherry and greis, among others, with production volumes of up to 16,000 cases of the former and 12,000 of the cherry and greis.

Regarding other crops, 8,000 boxes of cucumbers and another 8,000 boxes of chillies are grown per hectare; produce which also has a significant value added, given the high standards and technology implemented that takes control of pests and diseases.

These products are mostly intended for the export market, particularly the United States, where prices for such specialities can reach very high levels.
