UK: Watercress farmers help get bride to the church on time

The Watercress Company, Vitacress Salads and Bakkavor came to the rescue of a Hampshire bride, Jenny Honiatt 25, by arranging for her to be escorted in a Rolls Royce led by a brass band through the 15,000 strong crowd at the annual Watercress Festival in Alresford on Sunday 18 May. Proceedings were specially halted by festival organisers to allow Jenny to get to her wedding on time.

The manageress of specialist collectors’ toy shop Dolly Daydreams has lived in the ‘capital of watercress’, on Alresford’s main street with her fiancé, Dave Crockford, for two years and unknowingly booked their wedding date on the same day as the festival. Jenny said: “I am extremely grateful to the festival organisers for kindly sending a beautiful Rolls Royce to whisk me, and my dress through the crowds safely!” Jenny is such a fan of watercress she even included it in her bouquet.

Charles Barter, of the Watercress Alliance made up of The Watercress Company, Vitacress Salads and Bakkavor and who are the main sponsors of the Festival, said: “We discussed Jenny’s dilemma at one of our committee meetings and unanimously agreed we had to help get her to her wedding on time! The Festival does take over the town for the day and we couldn’t allow it to spoil their wedding day. We wish Jenny and Dave all the very best for their future together.”

The Watercress Festival marks the start of the British Watercress season and of National Watercress Week which runs from 18 May – 24 May 2014. It celebrates everything great about the little leaf with a big peppery bite which is regarded as a genuine superfood, packed full of over 15 vital minerals and vitamins.

There were more people than ever at this year’s Festival enjoying the cookery demos, food stalls, the Watercress Food Awards and of course the World Watercress Eating Championship which this year was won by David White who took 1 minute 59 seconds to eat two 80g bags of watercress – a little slower than last year as the effects of the gloriously hot summer’s day kicked in!
