The fruit fly Drosophila suzukii originates from Asia and arrived in Europe via North America in 2009. Soft fruit crops such as strawberries, raspberries, and cherries are particularly susceptible to damage caused by this fruit fly. The female lays eggs in unripe fruit. The larvae eat from the fruit flesh, causing soft patches in the fruit. In addition, secondary problems (such as fungi) can cause the accelerated rotting of damaged fruit.
Control methods
As this species of fruit fly generally chooses unripe fruit, the use of chemical crop protection is virtually impossible. This is primarily due to the safety period and the number of applications. In covered crops, insect netting can offer some protection. For outdoor crops, a monitoring and capture system is currently the only safe way to limit the damage caused by Drosophila suzukii.System
In comparison with existing systems on the market, it has been demonstrated that Koppert's Fruit Fly Attractant together with the yellow Moskisan trap ensure the highest capture rate. The system is suitable for both monitoring and capturing Drosophila suzukii.Special cap
In order to prevent the undesired capture of other insects, a special green cap (canister) is available that makes the trap inaccessible for larger insects. This cap needs to be ordered separately. The problem of capturing other insects can thus be largely resolved.Use
Hang up the traps at a temperature of 10 °C or higher and when the fruit starts to appear on the trees/shrubs.For more information
