Dutch family thrives with cultivation of cherries in Venlo greenhouse
"Our speciality is to harvest as early as possible in the year, producing large dark sweet cherries. We grow 33 different varieties, but the main focus are on the early varieties," says Corstiaan Oudijk. "Our strength is that customers can choose the variety they want, whether it be a Burlat, Merchant of Canada's Giant."
"About 25% of the cherries are sold on the lot. At the auction you can only wait and see what price you get," says the former gerbera grower. This year, we began the cherry harvest on May 1, and the start has been good. The cherries look well, which is a big improvement over last year.”
The fruit grower typifies cherry as a very difficult crop. "It takes several years before you’re in production and you can’t afford to fail, because then it takes another year before you have another harvest. Similarly, the returns are not too high. Now, we are doing relatively well, but you never quite know what to expect."
