France: French farmers set up own supermarket

It is a whole new concept in the Lot region : farmers have come together to set up their own ''supermarket'' in the countryside.

La Halle de Cougnac was set up by Patrice Peulet, a young, imaginative farmer. Whilst the economic crisis is affecting many farmers, Patrice has successfully chosen to produce vegetables and sell directly.

''We are 6 producers in the Gourdon region, who have grouped together to offer a large range of food products that we produce and process on our farms. We have 2 employees, but the farmers take it in turns to be in the shop to have a contact with the consumers, hear their remarks, understand what they want, and be very reactive.'' He says that he is confident about their future and underlines the high quality of their produce and the short circuit from the farm to the shop.

''It is what consumers are asking for today''.
