Germany: Wittenberg Gemüse: 'Tomatoes accidentally dumped in the forest'
The project leader of the German company Wittenberg Gemüse GmbH has admitted that an employee accidentally dumped large quantities of tomatoes near the edge of a forest. The employee failed to report the mistake.
When hikers discovered the large amount of tomatoes in Apollensdorf, locals were outraged. Helmut Rehhahn, project manager of the company, stated that the dump was an accident due to the ignorance of a new employee. "It's sorting waste,” he explains. “Containers in which this waste is normally taken away, were all full. The employee did not report the problem, but just dumped the waste in the forest."
Accusations that the tomatoes were discarded overproduction to keep prices high, Rehhahn calls unfounded. Wittenberg’s sales are reportedly going very well, and the company now has contracts with Edeka, Rewe and Kaufland. Environmental agencies, however, are looking into the matter.
