Spain: Tomato and pepper prices; 40% lower than last year

According to COEXPHAL, a general fall in prices affecting most vegetables in Almeria has been registered in recent weeks. Tomato and pepper prices have fallen by around 30% in a week and by 40% compared to the same period last season. Compared with 2 years ago, peppers are at the same level, while tomatoes are still currently cheaper.

Meanwhile, cucumber prices have followed the same negative path, although not in such a pronounced way. This week prices are in fact 35% lower than last year, although 10% higher than 2 seasons ago.

Overall, prices for all products (including aubergine and courgette) are lower compared to last year, after a downward trend which started on week 15.

The fall in prices is caused by several reasons, including the start of the summer production in central Europe, the rising temperatures at origin and the gradual loss in quality of the produce that is already in its latest harvest stages.
