US: Cardinal Fresh hopes packaging can lead to healthier choices

When Cardinal Fresh's Helmut Leili, in conjunction with Biax International, developed Evlon Taste Saver packaging for fresh produce, he was driven by more than a desire to come up with packaging that retains freshness and is renewable. He also wanted to make it easier for children to make healthy choices when it comes to food.

“My personal mission is to reduce obesity,” said Leili. “The secret, I believe, is having fresh fruit available that makes it easy to eat.” Because Evlon Taste Saver keeps produce fresh for long periods of time and allows for the packaging of fruit in convenient formats, the packaging can help make it easier to eat healthy.

“The series of packaging can change the way small fresh fruit can be distributed well beyond the current retail grocery sales channels,” explained Leili. Because it's made from renewable materials, it benefits everyone involved.

“This is about having a package that can be easily sold in vending machines, convenience stores, even places like fast food restaurants who can add fruit to their menus,” said Leili. “It's about getting fresh fruit and vegetables into kids' hands, then they will get it into their mouths.”
