Greenhouse Vegetable Statistics - Latest U.S. Census of Agriculture Report

The latest U.S. Census of Agriculture Report, dated 2012 and released May 2, 2014 has new information on the greenhouse vegetable industry. According to the report, there are 8750 farms, with 2250 acres (911 ha.), and sales of over $634 million. This is a dramatic increase for all factors over the 2007 report. Farms- +115%, area- +59%, sales- +15% .

Because of the significant differences among countries in their use of the term “greenhouse”, comparisons can only be made in very general terms.

Although listed as “greenhouse” vegetables and herbs, the U.S. census definitions are very broad. In the fine print of the report, it notes that “greenhouse” is actually “under cover”. Their definition of “under cover” is “generally defined as greenhouses, cold frames, cloth houses, and lath houses”. In other parts of the report, they list “under glass or other protection”.

Statistics Canada uses the definition of “the total area under glass and plastic”. This is considerably different than the U.S. definition.

The Netherlands’ reports use the definition of “cultivated under glass”.

A useful, complete summary of this data, as well as the latest statistics for Canada and Mexico, are now being prepared. This information will be available soon as the “North American Greenhouse Vegetable Production Statistics” publication.
