China: Meishan asparagus now in season, fewer plantations than previous years

The Meishan Agriculture Office of Meishan County in Ningbo City, Zhejiang Privonce, reports that asparagus planting has a 30-year history in the county and has the largest plantation in the region reaching 2000 acres in its peak period.

However in the recent years, the plantations have been decreasing due to land acquisitions and construction. As the productions decrease, orders for export also decreased. Development of new plantations already decreased.

Currently only a few dozen acres are left and the harvest are now mainly sold local markets. And because of the low asparagus production, supply in the market is low as well resulting to high prices. Asparagus now sell around 10 yuan per half a kilo.
