Russia: Kamchatka will increase production of greenhouse vegetables

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Processing Industry of the Kamchatka region, the gross harvest of greenhouse vegetables on the Kamchatka Territory amounted to 1055 quintals in 2013.

"Revival of the greenhouse vegetable production using geothermal sources is one of the priorities of agricultural development in Kamchatka," - said the Minister of Agriculture of the Kamchatka Territory Alexander Kucherenko. According to him, the State programme of rural development of the Kamchatka region in 2014-2018 provides total funding of 378 million rubles (7,638,450 €). As a result of this support, the gross production of greenhouse vegetables will be increased up to 2 000 tons per year and the greenhouses area - up to 30 hectares.

Almost 90% of greenhouse vegetables on the Kamchatka market are imported, mainly from China. Thus, there is a niche on the local food market to promote domestic (Kamchatka) greenhouse vegetables.

Annually the province produces approximately 16.6 thousand tons of vegetables grown indoors and outdoors. The amount of greenhouse production is about 90 tons. The total volume of produced and imported vegetables in the region is 38.2 thousand tons - 91% of the amount the region needs.

Currently, there is an investment idea for the construction of the greenhouse complex in the region. "Vegetables will be grown using low volume hydroponics with drip irrigation and crop nutrition with fertilizer solutions," - said A.Kucherenko. According to him, the total project cost could amount to 1.7 billion rubles (34.5 ml €) of borrowed funds from extra budgetary resources.
