"Russia: "Chinese firm cultivates greenhouse vegetables on highly polluted soil"

The Chinese firm "Fei Lun", engaged in crop production, leased 6 hectares of fertile land in the Krasnodar region three years ago. Cucumbers, tomatoes and other vegetables were grown in greenhouses built on the leased land. The way the vegetables were produced was known only to the employers - illegal Chinese migrants.

When inspectors of Federal Migration Service checked the site, they paid special attention to the fact that the labels on the barrels with fertilizers were in Chinese without translation. It meant that those herbicides and pesticides can’t have been certified in Russia and thus it was unclear what sort of chemicals had been used.

As a result, the soil was contaminated by a huge concentration of nitrates exceeding the allowable level by seven times. One can imagine the amount of chemicals inside the produced vegetables. It’s rather difficult to trace the location of those vegetables now. So it is highly recommended to use a nitrate-tester in order to keep safe.

Now, experts have assessed the extent of the damage caused to the land at half a million Euro. The company "Fei Lun" will be sued for damages in court. But when the Rosselkhoznadzor (The Federal service for veterinary and phytosanitary surveillance) officials visited the company for the last time, they found nobody there. So, no one knows who will pay the damages.
