Peter Spaans, Van der Hoeven:

Netherlands: 'The innovativeness of Dutch horticulture is on a downward trend'

According to Peter Spaans, Director of Van der Hoeven Horticultural projects, the horticultural sector in the Netherlands remains under severe pressure. The primary sector in particular is still having a difficult time. Only a limited number of producers are able to report positive figures, he writes in Van der Hoeven's latest newsletter.

A large number of companies are dependent on these companies in the primary sector. It is thus not surprising that these difficult times are having a considerable impact on these companies. Here too suppliers, including technicians and greenhouse builders, but also suppliers of expertise and subcontractors, are under great pressure. The financiers of all these companies, the Dutch banks, should be cautious in assessing these companies and are sometimes unfortunately compelled to take harsh decisions. The natural innovativeness of Dutch horticulture is on a downward trend.

Outside the Dutch market we see a completely different picture; plenty of projects, one even more innovative than the next. All over the world solutions are being sought to reduce energy and water consumption and CO2 emissions. It is no longer the case that all the new ideas and techniques are tested first in the Netherlands. That makes you think..
