Last March saw the arrival of the German cucumber season. The cucumber is the country's most popular vegetables. Every German eats an average of 3.45 kg per year. Now, fresh cucumbers are again available in the German market.
The fruit is often eaten raw or processed, in salads for example, but also in cocktails. Cucumbers belong to the Cucurbitaceous family and are grown in Germany almost exclusively in greenhouses, as the plants need heat and do very well under glass. In Germany the cucumber season lasts until autumn and cucumbers are available almost all year round.
The vegetables consist largely of water: for up to 95 percent. Cucumbers are also low in calories and contain valuable vitamins and minerals. The nutrients are just under the skin.
