China: The internet age enters greenhouses

The Lanling Modern Agricultural Pilot Park opened in March 2013 and utilized modern technology by using the internet and wireless connections to monitor and control the park.

The park’s system controls and monitors several locations in the greenhouses including air/soil temperature and humidity, lighting conditions, carbon dioxide concentrations, watering, fertilization, cooling system operations, etc. A very modern, automated and scientifically managed park for vegetable production, which can be controlled remotely.

The Lanling County Vegetable Industry Development Office states that this kind of intelligently controlled greenhouse change previous experiences in vegetable cultivation. By regulating temperature and humidity, pest and disease incidence rates can be reduced by more than 60%. More than 20 greenhouses have remote surveillance cameras.

The pilot park appears to have been proven successful. However the complete network costs about 5-6 million yuan. Local farmers will not be able to afford the costs, even for some cooperatives. But it is a first step for the county and that the government is willing to develop. The goal is to eventually be able to pass on the technology to local farmers and be able to educate them.
