Swiss tomato production increased

In Switzerland the domestic production of tomatoes has increased by 23% in the past five years. Imports dropped with 7% over the same period. Impressive is also the large increase in the supply of cherry tomatoes. This range increased by 84% (domestic production) and 43% (imports).

The domestic production of tomatoes increased in the past five years, from 40,945 tons in 2009 to 50,339 tons in 2013, according to figures from the Swiss Federal Office for Landwirtschaft (BLW). Imports decreased in the same period from 39,918 tons to 36,961 tons.

Between 2008 and 2013, the domestic production of cherry tomatoes increased from 4,111 tons in 2009 to 7,558 tons in 2013. The import volume increased from 7,601 tons in 2009 to 10,835 tons in 2013. Thus the market share of cherry tomatoes increased by 35% to 41% and the share of cherry tomatoes to the total range of 15% to 21%.
