US (NC): Metrolina Greenhouses closes five-acre operation in Huntersville

Metrolina Greenhouses, a wholesale plant supplier based in Huntersville, N.C., is eliminating 57 full-time jobs in Pendleton as it closes that five-acre operation May 31.

Employees are being offered jobs at the company’s larger greenhouse in York, said Metrolina’s chief financial officer, Michael Colitti.

Colitti said Metrolina supplies plants to about 2,000 garden centers at major retailers such as Walmart, Lowe's and Home Depot. He said the company last year acquired the Pendleton property leaseholder, Stacy’s Greenhouses.

Colitti said Metrolina’s Pendleton operation is being consolidated with its 300-acre growing center in York. He said the company decided “it was just costing us more than we were getting in return” to stay in Pendleton.

The Pendleton closing will affect 18 seasonal jobs in addition to the 57 full-time jobs, Colitti said. He said many of the employees previously worked with Stacy’s and had moved to Pendleton from York three years ago. Employees were given notice of the May 31 closing last week, Colitti said.
