Dutch horticulture project in Japan in full swing

The Sendai Horti Experience, a 10-hectare project in which Westland Horticulture is introduced in Japan, is about 40% ready, says Remko Bakelaar. Bakelaar got involved in the development of horticulture in Japan after the 2012 tsunami, and he sees opportunities for high-quality, Dutch horticulture. The Sendai Horti Experience is the first project to come out of this involvement.

The Experience includes a greenhouse of ten hectares, divided into several blocks and aims to teach growers how to run an independent company. The Experience is to host presentations and pilots, technical training and cultivation information. The costs must be borne by the Japanese government and the entrepreneurs themselves. The project also involves several Dutch suppliers. "The budget and the intended acreage are large, but even with a major investment the Japanese producers will have to start on a small scale," says Bakelaar. Another 3-hectare project is awaiting government funding.
