Netherlands to organize a horticulture trade mission to SaudiArabia

From 3 - 7 May 2014 the Netherlands Council for Trade Promotion (NCH) will organize a trade mission for the horticultural sector to Saudi Arabia. This mission will be organized in cooperation with the Netherlands Embassy in Riyadh. The purpose of this mission is to present the Dutch know-how on the horticultural sector to decision makers, both in private and public sector in Saudi Arabia.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia offers interesting export and investment opportunities. Several surveys indicate that the country is interested in Dutch know-how, innovative technological solutions and products. Participation in this mission is a good opportunity to present your innovative solutions, to explore the market and to extend your relations in the Saudi Market.

Why Saudi-Arabia? Why this industry?

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, with a population of 28 million, is the largest individual market in the region. The Agro-Food sector in the Kingdom is witnessing a steady growth rate, due in part to the rapidly increasing population. The country annually imports 85% percent of its food products; horticultural products from The Netherlands, among others, are an important part of these imports. In 2012, Dutch exports of food and agricultural products to Saudi Arabia had a value of € 390 million. The Netherlands is the 2nd largest exporter of agricultural products (after the USA).

Some key facts:
  • 5.9% - The average agriculture Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) for the last five years
  • Over € 8 billion - The Saudi agricultural output in 2011
  • Saudi Arabia is the Middle East’s largest individual food importer
  • Over 200 new agricultural projects have been given permits in the Kingdom in 2011
  • A 5% annual steady growth is recorded in the Kingdom’s food market

Increased Governmental Spending and Investment Diversification

The Saudi Government announced at the beginning of this year its’ highest budget to date: € 136 billion with €12 billion allocated to the agricultural sector. This is in line with the Ministry of Agriculture’s strategy to support the continued growth of the industry. In addition to existing projects, the budget allowance goes to new investments including prestigious horticulture projects to meet the nation’s growing needs.
