Kenya Flower Council held productive meeting:

"Kenya: "There should be only one standard, one code of practice for breeders, propagators, growers"

Between 11th and 12th March, the Kenya Flower Council held very productive meetings with breeders, propagators, growers, senior official from KEPHIS, facilitated by consultants. The meetings focused on a review of the standards KS 1758 2004, with a view to evaluate and update it. A section of the participants also looked at the code of practice; a tool to implement the said standard.

One of the main outputs is that there should be only one standard and one code of practice for breeders, propagators and growers. Further, that it should apply, without exception, to all growers (breeders propagators and flower growers), with due attention to general provisions; sourcing of breeding material; pests and disease control; quality assurance; Inspection and licensing; audits & certification. Also very central to the discussions were best business practices on obligations, recourse and arbitration.

These discussions and interactions will continue until the end of March. Thereafter a final revised standard, code of practice, checklists and recommendations for policy and implementations guidelines will be drawn, ratified, tested and tried by the end of 2014.
