US (WI): Deep freeze has greenhouses behind schedule

The continued cold is starting to have an impact on area greenhouses. Many say they're now at least two weeks behind schedule getting your flowers and vegetables ready for late spring.

At Larry's Bellevue Gardens, 5 of the 8 greenhouses are barren and frozen. "Usually this time of year we open up these doors and go into the other set of greenhouses, and we walked back here and we go, 'Look at the ice, guess we're not going outside through this door.' And I've never seen this before since we've been here," Larry Rabas said.

Jamie Hemenway-Peotter at Mayflower Greenhouse in Hobart said, "It's outrageous, because we have just a thin sheet of plastic between us and the outdoors. If the sun is shining we're pretty good; but the night time is hard, the heaters run constantly all night."

Greenhouses estimate their heating bills could be up 50-percent this year. How that and other cold-related issues impact the prices you pay when planting season rolls around remain to be seen.
