Spain: Better results for zucchini growers in Almeria

In 2013 zucchini producers in the Spanish region Almeria got higher than average prices for their products than the year before, said German Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft (AMI) on their website. The average grower price was 0.60 Euro/kg in 2013, 5% more than 2012.

In 2012 and 2013 they harvested about 5.84 kg zucchine per m². The higher average prices were enough to cover and compensate the slightly increased production costs. In 2013, the producers got better business results than they did in 2012. The profit after deduction of changeable and regular costs increased by about 8%, according to information from the local agriculture directors and the foundation Cajamar.

According to the latest figure from the German Office of Statistics, Germany imported 67,600 tonnes of zucchini up until November 2013, 3% less than in 2012. 74% of the total import volumes, 50,100 tonnes came from Spain. Imported volumes from Spain were 2% lower than in 2012. According to AMI and BLE, at German wholesalers, Spanish zucchini had an average price of 1.54 Euro per kg. In 2013 zucchini was 3% more expensive than the year before. The price exceeded the five year average by 13%.
