Netherlands: Scaling in greenhouse vegetable sector

Since 2000,the number of greenhouse vegetable companies has dropped with 57 percent to justunder 1.100 businesses. Last year, greenhouse companies cultivated around 5.300hectares, which is 14 percent less than in 2000. In 2013, 0.38 hectares of landwas cultivated with one annual work unit, generating 119 thousand euros in standardrevenue. In 2000 this was 0.41 hectares and 96 thousand euros. The higherproductivity led to a 24 percent higher standard yield per labor year. Thestandard yield of the total greenhouse vegetable industry has increased by 17percent in the 2000-2013 period.

The average greenhouse vegetable company

In 2013, the average greenhouse vegetable company had 5.0 hectares of cultivated land, 101 percent more than in 2000. This growth resulted in an increase in the average standard yields of 174 percent. The labor employed has increased with 120 percent at an average greenhouse vegetable company.
