More and more horticulture at Fruit Logistica:

Hard to make contact with foreign growers at Dutch exhibitions

Year after year, more horticultural entrepreneurs are located at Fruit Logistica. Why are they interested in a trading exhibition? Agrolux and Horticoop explain: "At Dutch exhibitions it's really hard to make contact with foreign growers."

Agrolux and Horticoop are making their debute at Fruit Logistica this year. "Next year we will visit the fair," says Nico van der Houwen of Agrolux. "Many of our costumers have a booth at Fruit Logistica and potential costumers from over the whole world visit this exhibition." For example big American cultivation companies. "These companies are at American fairs as well as here. That's also why this fair is interesting for us."

Growers from Kazakhstan
A big part of Agrolux's turnover is earned overseas. For example, this year the company sold to Uzbekistan. "At the exhibition it's possible to meet growers from Kazakhstan and the Ukraine. That doesn't happen every day." Next week you can visit Agrolux at the Horticulture Relation Days in Gorinchem, The Netherlands and maybe at the Ukrainian trade show. "Last year in the Ukraine we saw there were a lot of visitors, including many Dutch growers.

To be present at so many exhibitions must cost a lot of money, but Van der Houwen doesn't agree. "It's just how big your booth is. Our booth in Berlin covers only a few meters. so the costs are not so high."

New strategy
Horticoop participates in the fairs, due to their new strategy. "When we evaluate our participations we see a downward trend in the number of visitors to the international fairs close to home, like Horti Fair and IPM. We have an international target market and we'd like to meet foreign growers. That's hard to do at Dutch exhibitions." That's why Horticoop have decided not to focus on the participation in Dutch fairs. "We don't wait for the foreign growers to come to us, but we go to them." Horticoop will visit German, American, Turkish and African fairs.

Big horticultural companies
Are the exhibition visitors happy with the participation of these companies? After all Fruit Logistica is a trade fair. "I don't know yet," says Brand. "We'll let you know after the exhibition. Yet we think the visitors will be enthusiastic, otherwise we wouldn't go. There will be many people from big horticultural companies, so that means that we should also be there."
