Peru: Exports of piquillo pepper grew by 8.4% and reached 18 markets

According to Adex, exports of Peruvian piquillo pepper reached 18 markets and amounted to $38.7 million dollars between January and November 2013, 8.4 percent more than in the same period of 2012.

The piquillo pepper is a capsicum variety regarded as a gourmet product with a high demand, mainly in Europe.

According to Adex Data Trade's Business Intelligence, Spain is the largest recipient of piquillo pepper, accounting for 89 percent of total shipments.

According to the Adex Agro's management, Spanish demand between January and November 2013 increased by 17.1% and amounted to 34.3 million.

Following Spain are the U.S., with 5 percent of total exports (a 41.8 percent decrease) and France, which increased by 88.7 percent.

Other markets were Australia, UK, Chile, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Italy, Denmark, Brazil, Uruguay, Tokelau, Portugal and Mexico.

The export volume of piquillo pepper in the first eleven months of 2013 was 18,083 tonnes, i.e. a 6.8 percent increase.

According to data from Adex, the main exporters of piquillo pepper were Camposol, EcoacuĂ­cola, Sociedad Agricola Viru, Danper Trujillo, Agroindustrias AIB, Recursos Integrados and Gandules, among others.

Adex reported that the V International Capsicum Convention would be held in the auditorium of the Hotel Chavin de Barranca in Lima on February 19 and 20 this year. The convention will be held in order to discuss and analyse the capsicum's reality and to drive the sector's competitiveness.

The topics that will be covered include: health and safety, competitiveness, innovation, production, and markets. National and international experts from the United States and Spain, among other countries, will conduct the keynote presentations.
