Spain: Pepper profits amounted to 33,000 Euro per hectare
According to Andalusia's Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Rural Development and the Cajamar Foundation, greenhouse pepper producers in the province of Almeria obtained a net profit of 33,000 Euro per hectare in 2013.
According to Andalucia's Observatory of Prices and Markets, in 2013, producers sold their peppers at an average price of 0.76 Euro per kilo.
Data from the Andalusian Ministry of Agriculture indicate that greenhouse pepper production costs were of 2.39 Euro per square meter in the 2011/2012 season. The Cajamar Foundation estimated a 0.5 percent average increase in production costs for the 2012/2013 season. Thus, the cost of producing peppers in greenhouses in 2013 was 2.40 Euro per square meter.
According to the data, the average yield of peppers in 2013 was of 7.5 kilos per square meter, i.e. an average net yield of 33,000 Euro per hectare in Almeria, contemplating all varieties.
Pepper prices reached their highest point in March at an average price of 1.31 Euro per kilo, followed by April (0.94 €/kg) and February (0.82 €/kg). Their lowest point was in November, when the average price did not exceed 0.56 Euro per kilo.
Pepper varieties
The average price for Green lamuyo pepper in 2013 was 0.64 Euro per kilo, 4.91% more than in 2012, when they averaged 0.61 Euro per kilo.
Red lamuyo and green California prices remained the same as in 2012. The red lamuyo was sold at an average of 0.74 €/kg and the green California at 0.66 €/kg .
The price of origin of the red California declined 7.50 percent over the previous year, as it was sold at 0.74 €/kg in 2013 and at 0.80 €/kg in 2012.
The average price of the yellow California pepper in 2013, 0.77 Euro per kilo, was 6.10 percent lower than in 2012. Meanwhile, the Italian pepper's price increased by 7.57 percent and was sold at an average price of 0.71 Euro per kilo in 2013.
