At the end of November last year Benny Cuypers of Lava, Belgium took stock of the greenhouse vegetable season. He indicated that most growers were satisfied, with the exception of those focussed on the tomato cultivation. That season fell to pieces and this was mainly due to the large supply. Benny did not believe it was entirely impossible that with a tomato year like that there would be shifts in the greenhouse vegetable cultivation. At the moment the new areas have been announced and there is indeed a large shift in the various vegetables, although it isn't just among the traditional tomatoes. There is little run in between the various cultivations.
Increase in tomato specialities and peppers
He notes that there is a small decline of a few percent on the traditional tomatoes. "In both loose flesh tomatoes and vines. There is also a strong increase in tomato speciality. The area is now around 50% larger than last season and comes close to 100 hectares. The extension of specialities has been going on for a number of years; the specialities have also had a better year than the regular tomatoes in general." Cuypers indicates that the tomatoes prices have gone down strongly again this week. "The cucumbers, on the other hand, are having a good start to the season, but there aren't enough volumes yet to predict anything."
Another striking extension is that of the peppers. "They had an increase in area of 20%, mainly in red and yellow varieties. This is mainly among growers from Holland. There is no change to be seen in cucumbers and aubergines, it is a status quo."
