Belgium: Rise expected in lettuce prices
In the fruit market things are fairly quiet, though trading is a bit better than last week. "It’s not too busy, not too quiet, I’d say somewhere in between," summarizes Stefaan Dobbels of export company Gerdo. The main vegetables currently supplied by his company are leeks and carrots. "The leek prices are too low and I don’t see any change yet. The main reason is the mild weather, and growers are working below cost prices."
Gerdo also exports lettuce, notably to France. "Lettuce isn’t really expensive at the moment, but I expect things to improve somewhat in the coming week. Today the price was around 34 cents and I think next week we’ll see a small rise. In France there is less supply and thus the demand will increase. Here in Belgium production goes as planned.”
Gerdo was founded as a cannery by Gerard Dobbels and his son Carlos in 1965. Gradually activities shifted towards the trading of fresh vegetables for the industry. In the late 80s, the third generation, Stefaan Dobbels, joined the company. With him came the export of leek to France for the fresh market. Stefaan managed to expand both the customer base and the range and today the company exports to various countries.
