Netherlands: New research greenhouse for Radboud University
The current research faculties no longer meet the requirements of modern study. Looije came up with a greenhouse design in which all requirements are reflected, that measures up to the high architectural demands and that fits in the available surface.
There are a couple of particulars which do not occur in a standard production greenhouse. Architectural building elements such as student rooms and office facilities are integrated into the greenhouse design. The result is a building in which greenhouse construction and building construction are fully integrated.
Climate chambers
Technical installations are accommodated in separate corridors, which can be seen from a visitors corridor or the lookout point on the second floor. In addition the greenhouse contains several departments in which can be worked with genetically modified plants, which puts high demands on the ceiling.
There are five climate chambers in which the growth and development of plants can be precisely defined. Internally, the temperature, humidity and light can be accurately controlled
Sustainability
One of the most important assignments for Looij Agro Technics was the sustainability of the indoor office block, which has to be energy efficient with an Rc of 4.5. Not only materials with a high Rc-value will be used, yet also an integrated climate control for greenhouse and office.
It is expected that the research greenhouse will be taken into use at the start of the new academic year in September 2014.
