Spain: Lower trade margins for extra-early vegetables

According to the Index of Prices at Origin and Food Destinations (IPOD), the trade margins between producers and consumers dropped moderately in December.

The most noteworthy is the case of lettuce, which dropped by 578 percentage points compared to November, multiplying its price from origin to destination by 3.52.

Other vegetables grown intensively also experienced drops, with the exception of courgettes, which increased by 105 percentage points compared to the previous month, multiplying its price from origin to destination by 2.66. Growers received an average price of 0.90 Euro/kilo, while consumers paid 2.39 Euro/kilo.

Regarding peppers, producers received 0.65 Euro/kilo for the green variety, while consumers paid 1.92 Euro/kilo. With a 195% differential, they dropped by 70 percentage points compared to November and multiplied their price by 2.95. Meanwhile, red pepper prices were 3.05 times greater, with a 205% increase and 87 percentage points less than in November. Growers received 0.64 Euro/kilo and consumers paid 1.95 Euro/kilo.

Aubergines saw their trade margin drop by 20 points, with their price from origin to destination increasing by 104% (2.04 times greater). Growers received 1.10 Euro/kilo, while consumers paid an average of 2.24 Euro/kilo.

Courgettes reached a trade margin of 166% (105 points more than in November), with 2.66 times higher prices at origin. Growers received 0.90 Euro/kilo, while consumers paid 2.39 Euro/kilo.

Salad tomatoes increased their average price by 251%, with 3.51 higher prices at origin. The differential dropped by 190 percentage points, with consumers paying 2.07 Euro/kilo, while growers received 0.59 Euro/kilo.

Cucumber prices were 217% higher, with a drop of 76 percentage points compared to November. The price paid by consumers (1.65 Euro/kilo) was 3.17 times greater than the average received by growers (0.52 Euro/kilo).
