Peru to export capsicums to the U.S. this year

Peru could start exporting fresh capsicum to the United States by the end of the year, as reported by the president of the Capsicum Committee of the Association of Exporters (Adex), Renzo Gómez Moreno. He informed that the country awaits the publication of the policy by the U.S. Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS). "Once this happens, 70% of the work will have already been done."

Furthermore, he announced that Adex is collaborating with Promperú in the elaboration of a market research study, which will provide information about how the capsicum market is structured in the United States.

Renzo Gómez stressed that until Peru is recognised as a country free from fruit flies, the United States will only accept fresh capsicum grown in greenhouses protected by netting. In this sense, he predicted that once access is granted, the number of hectares of capsicum plantations under such nettings will quickly multiply.
