It was the perfect occasion to talk to geneticists working at the ElEjdo and Torre Pacheco research centres about the products currently being cultivated in Italy and also about some business aspects, as Spain operates on the same markets.
-The pepper varieties examined were Hades, Oaxaca, Assen, Aquiles and Belmar (photo below).
The new products analysed were new red horns (120-150 grams each), MS 816 (Bandolero) MS815, as well as MS503 of the Cayenne type.
- As regards the tomato sector, the visit enabled a confrontation with local operators, who are leading in the bunch and cherry sector.
Both these sectors are in fact more and more standardised according to international parameters. Meridiem Seeds is specialising in the production of plum (Royalty and Capirex) and oblong varieties and introduced the new Verace, the only green tomato of this kind and ideal also for bunch harvesting.
Verace.
The new Raider cocktail tomato is also interesting thanks to its adaptability, colour and taste. Not to talk about the very early Ruano salad tomatoes: dark green, uniform and with an excellent taste.
Ruano.
In addition, the positive experiences with ELCabo were also discussed, together with the new Gadea, which can exalt the characteristics of ELCabo and can complement it thanks to the fact that it improves no cracking.
Gadea.
- Many types of aubergines were also discussed: in addition to the already very well-known Gospel (excellent for short days, produces seeds very slowly and has a long shelf-life), Frac (photo below) is also popular, thanks to its sweet flesh and slow production of seeds, making it ideal for organic producers who export aubergines.
Among the Meridiem Seeds varieties, Kareena is doing very well, also thanks to its productivity, small size, high quality and excellent taste.
- In addition to the widely known varieties of cucumber, American slicer parthenocarpic varieties are becoming very popular due to the fact that they are extremely digestible.
After the success of Zingaro in Southern Italy, Meridiem Seeds will launch the new Gypsy cucumber which is crunchy, digestible and very early. Plants are very easy to manage and tolerances to fungi and viruses are very good.
The novelty in this sector is represented by dark small 8-10 cm cucumbers like the 2BITES variety, which exalts the sweetness and crunchiness of the fruit. In fact, the entire Meridiem Seeds range is bitter-free and also includes new types of Pepino, like for example the brand new Favila.
