"Good prospects for Canarian tomatoes"

The Canarian tomato season erupted at Fortuna Frutos last November. "November was a poor month for Canarian produce as the warm Autumn enabled produce to still come from Holland, Belgium, Scandinavia and Central Europe, while import began from Morocco, Spain and the Canary Islands. These large volumes resulted in extremely low prices in the market," explained Gert-Jan Slobbe.

"December, by contrast, was a reasonably good market and the start of January has also been good. I have positive expectations for the coming period. Production decreased which resulted in better prices. Sales are wide and varied, from retail in Russia and Scandinavia to inland catering and food services," said Gert-Jan. He expects to offer Canarian tomatoes until June. "The quality dipped in December due to the heavy rainfall, but otherwise it has remained just fine."

This season Fortuna Frutos has expanded production in the Canary Islands by 50 hectares. New for this year together with Stephane Rion of Fortuna Frutos is the import of Mediterranean vegetables. "We are happy with the start. During November many items were reduced in price, but December was a good month for Spanish vegetables. These products work well with the selection of Canarian vegetables."
