Almeria, Andalusia:
Spain: Biological crop protection to become compulsory
Almeria's Regional Delegation of Agriculture, Fisheries and Environment is preparing the introduction of a series of compulsory measures aimed at intensifying the fight against illnesses and pests in agriculture. This is part of the initiative denominated "The Green Revolution", which was designed to promote the use of biological control methods instead.
Although the introduction of this new regulation was already on the works for some time with the goal of strengthening food safety measures for Almeria's crops, the recent spread of the New Delhi virus has motivated the speeding-up of the process.
The document will make biological crop protection compulsory in Almeria's greenhouses. The use of biologicals can still be integrated with the use of chemicals. The use of netting, traps and more hermetic structures will also be made compulsory.
Further steps will be taken to advance towards the 100% implementation of biological control from the start of the coming campaign.
