Record-breaking production of 3,051,027 tonnes

Spain: Cajamar presents positive horticultural figures of Almeria

In the last week of December, Cajamar presented its analysis of Almeria's horticultural campaign in 2013/2014. The report confirms the very positive results for Almeria's greenhouse agriculture. Almost all products have shown improvements and even record-breaking figures in terms of production, sales and exports.

The monograph reveals a slight 0.85% growth in the total greenhouse acreage, reaching 28,576 hectares. In terms of effective production acreage, taking into account all the crop cycles, the equivalent was of around 48,871 hectares, almost 6% more than in the previous campaign.

Meanwhile, production volumes increased by 2.6%, reaching a record-breaking 3,051,027 tonnes.

Although the weather conditions, with more moisture and fewer hours of sunshine, had an impact on the crops' productivity, most of them still registered larger production volumes, particularly in the case of courgettes, peppers and tomatoes. On the other hand, aubergines, and to a lesser extent, melons and lettuce, all dropped.

The value of all fruit and vegetable exports amounted to almost 1,984 million Euro, which represents an 11.5% growth compared to the previous season. Once again, tomatoes were the most exported, with peppers closely behind (500.8 and 488.4 million Euro respectively). All major products registered significant advances, especially Chinese cabbage, watermelon and green beans.

Regarding destinations, Almeria's dependency on the EU markets increased, with Germany once again being the main importer. The income generated from eastern European countries grew by just 2.1%, mainly as a result of the lower sales in Romania, Hungary and Lithuania.
